High School Hockey

Sharks Ice is proud to bring you the 15th season of the Sharks High School Hockey League, the premier high school league in Northern California, for the 2014-15 season. We offer two separate divisions, a Junior Varsity and a Varsity division. Unlike traditional high school sports where Junior Varsity and Varsity are predominantly decided by age, our divisions are exclusively decided by skill level. The Junior Varsity division will be made up of recreational/in-house/Travel level players that will be separated into three subdivisions based on skill with the most novice level being non-check, while the Varsity division will be comprised of Travel A/Tier players. The Junior Varsity (JV) season runs early October through roughly mid-March while the Varsity season runs mid-March through early June. No matter your skill level, there is a spot for you in the Sharks High School Hockey League.

In its first year of existence, the Sharks High School Ice Hockey League began with just four teams. For the 2013-2014 season, 26 teams were fielded with players from all over the Bay Area from as far north as Santa Rosa, Monterey to the south, Livermore to the east and Santa Cruz to the west.

With more and more kids playing ice hockey, Sharks Ice can now form teams made up solely of one school or geographical area. All players need to be enrolled in high school in Northern California. They also must provide all of their own HECC approved equipment. Practices and games will take place at Sharks Ice at San Jose, Sharks Ice at Fremont, and at the Oakland Ice Center. Most games will take place on the weekends with an occasional game played mid-week.

The JV Season starts with approximately 3 sessions for evaluation in which Sharks Ice staff observes the players to determine which of our divisions suits them best. The JV league has 3 divisions: A, B and C, with C being non-check for more novice players. The 3 divisions allow Sharks Ice to form teams in appropriate skill levels to create a competitive and fun atmosphere for all. Sharks Ice also looks to collaborate schools from the same geographical area to form teams. Teams based out of Sharks Ice at San Jose will have practice start times that vary between 3:45 and 4:15pm weekdays. Most games will be played on weekends, with the possibility of an occasional weeknight game. Teams from San Jose will play a majority of games in San Jose with the possibility of 3-4 games at Sharks Ice at Fremont and/or Oakland Ice Center.

Ice Hockey is a contact sport, thus requiring proper equipment to keep everybody safe. All players need to have the following HECC approved equipment before they take the ice:

  • Hockey helmet with full cage
  • Shoulder pads
  • Elbow pads
  • Ice hockey pants
  • Athletic supporter with cup for males and pelvic protector for females
  • Shin pads
  • Ice hockey skates
  • Ice hockey gloves
  • Hockey stick
  • Mouth guard (required for Bantams and older, but recommended for all age divisions)

Our Pro Shop carries all of the above items. The staff can help fit your player with proper equipment to make sure they are ready to go. In addition to the above equipment, a light-weight jersey and ice hockey socks should be purchased to wear for practices.

Carpool Requests

In order to emphasize parity between the teams and facilitate the drafting process, we have redefined our carpool request policy. For this season, each player is allowed one carpool request. Requests will only be valid if player A requests player B and player B requests player A. Not all carpool requests will be granted. The decision to whether or not we grant a request will depend on skill level of players involved, division assignments and team equality. Carpool requests should be clearly written in the Additional Comments section of the High School registration form.
